How Often Should I Reconcile My Business Bank Account?

Most businesses should reconcile their bank accounts regularly, with the ideal frequency depending on transaction volume and business activity. A business with frequent transactions may benefit from weekly or even more frequent reconciliation, while a smaller business may be able to reconcile monthly. The important point is to avoid allowing transactions to accumulate for long periods without review.

Regular bank reconciliation compares the transactions in your accounting software with the actual transactions shown by your business bank account. This helps identify missing transactions, duplicates, incorrect amounts, bank fees and other discrepancies.

For businesses using Xero, bank feeds can make reconciliation easier, but the transactions still need to be reviewed and allocated correctly. Regular reconciliation can also improve the reliability of financial reports because the accounting records are kept closer to the business's actual financial activity.

It can be particularly helpful before BAS reporting because GST-related transactions and other financial records have already been reviewed. Young Guns Bookkeeping provides bank reconciliation and bookkeeping support to Melbourne small businesses.

The appropriate frequency depends on your transaction volume, number of bank accounts and how quickly you need up-to-date financial information. If your accounts are currently behind, a bookkeeper can perform catch-up reconciliation before establishing an ongoing schedule. The key is consistency. Reconciling regularly is generally easier than allowing months of transactions to build up and then trying to identify discrepancies all at once.
