Should I Use Xero?

Xero can be a useful accounting platform for many Australian small businesses, particularly businesses that want cloud-based access to their financial records. Whether you should use Xero depends on your business requirements, existing systems, budget and accountant or bookkeeper preferences. One of the main advantages of cloud accounting is that business owners and authorised advisers can access financial information from different locations.

Xero can also connect with bank accounts and provide tools for invoicing, bills, reconciliation, reporting and other accounting tasks. Automation can reduce repetitive data entry, although transactions should still be reviewed regularly. For businesses with employees, contractors, inventory or more complex requirements, the appropriate accounting setup may require additional consideration. A bookkeeper can help configure workflows and maintain the system so it reflects how the business actually operates.

Xero can be particularly useful when the business owner wants regular visibility of income, expenses, outstanding invoices and cash flow. However, accounting software is only as useful as the information entered into it. Incorrect coding, unreconciled transactions or outdated records can make reports unreliable.

Young Guns Bookkeeping provides Xero bookkeeping support for Melbourne small businesses and can help businesses maintain their Xero records. If you are considering switching accounting systems, discuss the change with your accountant or bookkeeper first and consider data migration, integrations, payroll and reporting requirements.
